- Will removing toxic backlinks improve my rankings?
- Usually not by itself, and I would rather tell you that up front. Google has discounted obvious spam links since Penguin 4.0 — it typically ignores them rather than penalizing you. Cleanup matters when you have a manual action, when the spam is dofollow with commercial anchors at real volume, or when you want a documented record before a reviewer ever looks. The rankings movement comes from the link-earning plan that follows.
- How do I know if my backlinks are actually toxic?
- A high toxicity score in a tool is not proof. What matters is whether the links are dofollow, whether the anchor text is commercial spam like 'buy backlinks cheap,' whether hundreds of unrelated sites share one IP, and whether they are still being added right now. Nofollow auto-generated 'Website Stats' pages inflate a report and change nothing. Sorting those two groups apart is the first thing I do.
- How long does a toxic backlink audit take?
- The Health Check is 3–5 business days. Full cleanup with the disavow file is 5–10 business days. Google does not publish a reprocessing timeline for disavow files, so plan on weeks, not days, for anything downstream — and expect the link-earning work to be what actually moves your authority score.
- Do I need a disavow file at all?
- Google's own guidance is that most sites do not. I still recommend it in two situations: you have a manual action to recover from, or you want the paper trail. It is a low-cost insurance policy, and it takes the question off your desk so you can stop worrying about it.
- Where did these links come from if I never bought any?
- Most often automated spam seeding. Networks scrape newly registered or newly active domains and auto-publish pages naming you, with their sales pitch as the anchor text — you are the advertising target, not the customer. Other common sources: scraper stats sites that publish an entry for every domain they crawl, a past agency's cheap link package, or competitor negative SEO. The cleanup is the same in every case.
- Can a competitor hurt my site with bad links?
- It happens, and it is less common than people fear. It is also the least useful thing to focus on, because you cannot control it and the fix is identical: document it, disavow it, and out-earn it with real links. If the pattern points at negative SEO, I will tell you — and then we get back to building.
- Do you work with businesses outside Michigan?
- Backlink work is not location-dependent, so yes. My ongoing local SEO clients are Detroit and Michigan businesses, and I take on 3–5 at a time. Audits and cleanups I do more broadly.
